The Studio |
Voice study with Mrs Healy begins with developing a healthy, flexible style of singing using the basic principles of classical vocal technique. Regular 30 or 45 minute lessons include vocalizing, sight-reading, and both classical and broadway songs to build the voice. Mrs. Healy teaches students in a room adjacent to the entrance of her home in Newark. Voice studies include 34 weeks of lessons, from September to June, 1 rep class, and 2 recitals, prep for Vocal Festival and several competitions, and numerous recital rehearsals. Summer lessons are offered for 7 weeks over the summer. Additionally, she offers coaching sessions for short term students preparing for the occasional audition. |
Studio RecitalsStudio Recitals are held at the Newark Methodist Church on Main Street. There are two recitals annually: Winter (late January) and Spring (early June).
Why two recitals instead of one like other studios? The vocal growth that happens in the studio when participating in two recitals is enormous. Having to prepare for two programs requires my students to be focused, open to hard work, and actively engaged in their repertoire. It provides an opportunity to sing with other students from other schools, and a chance to sing in front of another audience. Our winter concert focuses mainly on classical rep even though the student will also work on theater rep. In the spring we include our classical rep, and highlight theater music, as well as duets, and trios from operas and theater. This gives the students a chance to kick up their heels with some theater and popular music and work with students they generally don’t work with! |
Community Recitals
Select students are offered opportunities to perform on University of Delaware Community Recitals held in the University's Loudis and Gore Halls. These opportunities are offered to those students who are preparing for college auditions or participating in vocal competitions such as MTNA and NATS. This on stage experience gives them the chance to hone their performance skills under pressure.
